In a world where money is god. Where getting your selfie on social media is god. Where having a house your friends will be jealous of is god. There is a terrible emptiness.
We have a place in our spirit that only God can fill and it is being left empty by turning away from God to worship the emptiness of this world.
So People seek to fill that emptiness with other things.
People have always sought to follow the ‘easy’ path. Not wanting to rely on God, not wanting to obey. Wanting to do their own thing. They walk away from the very one who gives them true freedom. They one who fills the emptiness. The only one who matters.
Instead they fill that terrible emptiness with alcohol and recreational drug use. Drinking to excess. Drinking so much that all memory of the evening is obliterated. Drinking until they say and do stupid, embarrassing things. Drinking until the aggression takes over and they get into fights.
All these are mentioned in this verse. Those who are led astray by the mocking and brawling alcohol are foolish. Underlying the foolish action is the foolishness of rejecting God and seeking instead to fill the emptiness with alcohol instead of God.
The wise know the only cure for emptiness is God. How many generations of young people will be lost to the emptiness of binge drinking and recreational drug use before people turn to God? What are we as Christians doing to demonstrate the greatness of God, the desirability of following Him? What are we doing to demonstrate the great joy of knowing God?
It is time Christians stepped out of judgement, and harshness, or bowing to the god of social media and outdoing the Joneses, into the light of true faith and joy in God. It is time we showed the desirability of following Jesus. And it is time we prayed for the lost in love.

19:13-29
I apologise for not posting a blog last Saturday. It was not planned, nor was it possible to write a blog then or in the succeeding days. I am learning to listen to God and when He told me to take a break for a week, then I did. And it was hard to do.

There are some things in life we inherit from earthly relatives.
Other things God gives us.
That is life.
And life is also about being attentive to living according to God. Not what fellow human beings say we must do. But what God says.
Sometimes doing what God says involves doing something others don’t agree with. But remember, God’s instructions are about God. The opposition is about self.
So seek to obey God’s instructions. Loan your wealth to God and He will pay it back in full.
When feeling anger, respond, don’t react. Seek to pause before you react automatically to the anger. Uncontrolled anger hurts others. Pause and seek God and our anger will be directed to His plans.
Be humble and teachable. Seek God’s will.
Never forget, the deepest need of every man is unfailing love. But no other man can give that love.
Only God can give unfailing love. Don’t lose sight of that. Never lose hope in His unfailing love.
In life you will be asked to do many things by others. In your desire to be noticed, loved, accepted, the temptation is to say yes. But pause. Is that what God wants? But it is a wonderful opportunity! God must want me to take it. But He is saying no. How can that be? If you don’t accept His no ask yourself what god you are serving. Is it the god of self, of independence, of not trusting God? If you seek help from others when God is asking you to wait on Him, which god are you serving? Have you forgotten your faith in God?
Follow Him. Serve Him. He is the one who holds the words of eternal life (John 6:68). Without Him you are stumbling in terrifying darkness, being buffeted by terrible winds.
The love you seek can only be found in Jesus Christ. And that love flows over. Abundantly. It is yours. Just ask Him.

19:4-12
The sad ways of this world.
The sad ways of the blind fools.
The sad ways of those who prefer the easy path.
Most people prefer wealth and will desert a poor man but seek to befriend a wealthy one. The wealthy and famous become desirable friends. In the meantime, the poor man is ignored and receives little support from others.
But the wise person seeks wisdom and finds it feeds their souls. In their wisdom they realise their souls are important and they care about them, seeking to grow them. Such seeking for understanding leads to prosperity. Godly prosperity. This is not to be confused with worldly prosperity which is about money. Godly prosperity is far richer. And Wisdom gives patience and a forgiving hearth that overlooks offenses.
The repeated message of proverbs, as seen here in this passage, is that the world does not recognise Godly wisdom. It sees the flashy. The superficial. The intoxication of money. The world runs after the rich and famous. It does not see the greatest wealth lies in following Jesus. True riches are with Him.
We see the foolish deserting the poor in favour of the superficial. The false gods.
Interspersed through this is the maliciousness of the gossip. Twice in this passage the writer mentions the fate of the gossip, the malicious teller of tales. Such people will be punished in God’s time. So when it seems you are being attacked on all sides by such malicious people, draw comfort in the knowledge that God will not let them go unpunished.
The wise see true wealth lives in Jesus and in following Him. They stand at the junction. There is the easy path. The one that leads to fortune and fame. The path of the malicious gossip. That leads away from God. And there is the narrow path. Full of hardship and exclusion and difficulty. It leads to God.
And the wise take the narrow path. The path to life and wisdom. The path to God. Because they know that is the true path and God is who they want.
